Steps To Apply For FSSAI License For Small Business

Steps To Apply For FSSAI License For Small Business

The whole process of licensing and registration is conducted electronically through the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS), replacing the previous system of FLRS.

The steps that need to be followed are as follows:

  • Visit the FoSCoS Portal: You need to visit the FoSCoS portal and register your business account, or you log in if you already have an account.
  • Fill the Application Form: You need to fill in either Form A (Basic Registration) or Form B (State/Central License) and select the Kind of Business (KoB) that best describes your business.
  • Scrutiny and Inspection: The application is verified by the Designated Officer and in the case of license applications, an inspection is conducted. After successful verification, the FSSAI License is available to download.
  • Validity and Renewal: The renewal needs to be done between 120 days and 30 days prior to the end date of the current license. If the renewal is not completed on time, there is a penalty of ₹100 per day, and the license is liable to be rejected.

Common Struggles Of Small Food Businesses

Small scale food manufacturing and service operations face a large variety of challenges. Their commitment to their craft is never in question, but the complexity of the regulations often intimidates them. This results in:

  • Fear of Complexity: Small scale food business owners often assume that FSSAI compliance involves a lot of paperwork and complex legal procedures, thus deterring them from even beginning the process.
  • Cost Concerns: Small scale food business owners often have misconceptions about the cost of attaining the FSSAI license, considering it a financial burden rather than a worthwhile investment.
  • Lack of Awareness: Small scale food business owners often fail to recognize the fact that the food business license India is a mandate for their business, as well as the specific regulations applicable to their scale of operations.
  • Time Constraints: Small scale food business owners often remain too busy to dedicate their time to understanding the regulations.

New Instant Tatkal Registration Model

The FSSAI Tatkal Registration scheme is a blazing fast-track program meant to help small-scale food entrepreneurs and food startups through the removal of long waiting times for legal compliance. Employing digital verification of identity documents (Aadhaar and PAN) in real-time, the scheme grants Food Business Operators (FBOs) who are low-risk with the instant or at most within hours of application registration certificate. This Instant Issuance mode negates the traditional manual scrutiny and physical inspections, thus companies can immediately start their operations while fully complying with India’s food safety standards.

Eligibility Criteria for Tatkal Licensing

Tatkal Licensing is largely intended for the small risk categories. The kinds of businesses that the present Tatkal Licensing cover are as follows:
