Not at all! It is entirely at the discretion of the buyer whether you need Sedex membership or not. There is no statutory requirement for Sedex membership from a governmental level. However, all major UK & EU retailers require active Sedex membership and a valid SMETA report before conducting any business.
Choose the membership package that suits you, register your facility at the Sedex platform, submit your self-assessment questionnaire, associate your profile with the requesting buyer and then book a SMETA audit through the audit body of your choice after the documentation is completed.
Your company needs to pay the annual platform cost as set by Sedex for its membership. The higher cost will be incurred in terms of SMETA audit cost from the audit body.
Registration itself can be done in-house, but most first-time applicants bring in a Sedex Registration Consultant because a single error in membership type, site linking, or SAQ detail can delay buyer visibility by weeks.
