European, UK, and North American buyers now require their Indian suppliers to demonstrate that they source their products ethically even before a purchase order is issued. It is through the Sedex certification that the proof is provided, and it all begins with registering on the Sedex site, filling out a Self-Assessment Questionnaire, and in most cases, the SMETA audit on labor practices, health and safety, environmental performance, and business ethics. The experts at legal4sure take companies through this entire process from selection of the correct membership option up to closure of non-conformances from the audit.

A SMETA audit must be conducted by an independent Sedex Affiliate Audit Company (AAC).

The auditor evaluates the other assessment activities, depending on the scope, the audit can be 2-Pillar or 4-Pillar.
The audit identifies non-compliances and areas requiring improvement. The site receives a Corrective Action Plan Report (CAPR) rather than a simple pass/fail result.
Depending on the findings, corrective actions may be verified through document/desktop review or a follow-up onsite audit.
Once uploaded to the Sedex platform, the audit information can be shared with customers or buyers you authorise.
Legal4sure has been assisting Indian manufacturers and exporters for years using compliance programs based on buyer demands in Sedex. Our professional team acts as your Sedex Consultant in India and deals with all Sedex processes starting from platform registration and ending with closing of audit results. We know what are the most common mistakes made at SMETA audits – wrong wage calculations, insufficient grievance procedures or expired fire permits. Our Sedex SMETA Certification Services are designed to discover all these problems before the audit is conducted by external auditor.
As your Sedex Membership Consultant, we will assist you through the whole registration process: choose right membership category, create full site profile and connect it to buyers who need the information.
Our professionals carefully analyze your Self-Assessment Questionnaire and conduct pre-audit gap assessment based on SMETA criteria.

Before working with us, most factories ask the same things. These FAQs cover what Legal4sure does and how we support you.
Not at all! It is entirely at the discretion of the buyer whether you need Sedex membership or not. There is no statutory requirement for Sedex membership from a governmental level. However, all major UK & EU retailers require active Sedex membership and a valid SMETA report before conducting any business.
Choose the membership package that suits you, register your facility at the Sedex platform, submit your self-assessment questionnaire, associate your profile with the requesting buyer and then book a SMETA audit through the audit body of your choice after the documentation is completed.
Your company needs to pay the annual platform cost as set by Sedex for its membership. The higher cost will be incurred in terms of SMETA audit cost from the audit body.
Registration itself can be done in-house, but most first-time applicants bring in a Sedex Registration Consultant because a single error in membership type, site linking, or SAQ detail can delay buyer visibility by weeks.
You’ll need to submit a corrective action plan with dated evidence for each finding. Minor issues can usually be closed through documentation alone, while major findings, such as unpaid overtime or missing safety permits, often require a follow-up audit visit to verify closure.
Audit frequency depends on the risk rating assigned after each visit low-risk sites are typically re-audited every two to three years, while sites with prior major findings may be scheduled annually until performance stabilises.
Look for a consultant with direct SMETA audit exposure in your specific industry, since labour and safety benchmarks differ meaningfully between food processing, garments, and general manufacturing, along with a track record of closing corrective actions rather than just filing paperwork.
